Message: EuroCham Singapore’s support for the actions undertaken by the Singapore authorities to contain the Covid-19 outbreak

March 1, 2020

The European Chamber of Commerce (Singapore), or EuroCham Singapore represents the common interests of the European business community in Singapore. Europe and Singapore are already strong partners in many areas of collaboration and the recent coming into force of the EU-Singapore Free Trade Agreement in November 2019 is the strongest testament to that.

In light of the evolving Covid-19 worldwide epidemic, the Singapore government has been extremely prudent in taking the most appropriate steps necessary for the detection and containment of the virus, as well as maintaining a high degree of transparency with information sharing. Singapore’s approach has also been affirmed by international experts and the WHO, with a new study by Harvard University concluding that Singapore has the “gold standard” for near-perfect detection[1].

The Singapore government has also provided daily updates on cases and tracking efforts, with active engagement with foreign governments and business chambers.

In order to cushion the economic impact that the virus has on businesses, the Singapore government has provided assistance to industries affected by the coronavirus and have committed to further investing in infrastructure, education, and upskilling of the workforce to provide a strong economic platform for companies operating in Singapore.

EuroCham Singapore fully supports the actions undertaken by the Singapore government and with the support of our member companies, would like to provide the strongest assurance to our partners at the European Commission that Singapore has the resources and resolve to overcome this difficult period and rebound to an even stronger position.
