EuroCham Singapore releases Position Paper on Smart Mobility

The European Chamber of Commerce in Singapore (EuroCham) launched a position paper on Smart Mobility, a key area of EU-Singapore collaboration. The position paper is the third in a series of four statements compiled as part of the Chamber’s ongoing European Excellence in Sustainability Programme. It will also be published in the forthcoming EuroCham Sustainability Whitebook 2020, to be released on 17 November 2020.

Smart mobility encompasses mobility as a service, digitalisation of mobility, electrification of vehicles, and autonomous vehicles. The EuroCham position paper on the topic provides insights into the process of planning sustainable urban mobility and the attendant ecosystems that span regional organisations, states, and private businesses. Its objective is to create in Singapore and the EU a dialogue amongst the various stakeholders of a sustainable urban mobility planning process.

The position paper compares Singapore and the EU in terms of urban mobility policy, human capital development, incentives for buyers and users of electric vehicles, their homologation, charging infrastructure, and digitalization & autonomous driving. This comparison is based on EuroCham’s engagement with statutory boards in Singapore and extensive interviews with industry stakeholders. Recommendations include establishing  a smart mobility roadmap for both public and private operators in the automotive industry, extending Skillsfuture aid to private companies, and positioning Singapore as a regional hub for smart mobility innovation and a leader in the transition towards electrification.

This is the third in a series of four position papers to be released by EuroCham; two others, on Green Finance and Circular Economy, were released last month, and another on Clean and Efficient Energy will follow. These position papers will be disseminated with a view to facilitating dialogue between European companies and Singaporean authorities and regulators. They are accessible at EuroCham’s website: Smart Mobility Position Paper 2020.

In 2020, European Chamber of Commerce (Singapore) embraced the topic of Sustainability as its main focus of activities for the year. The ‘European Excellence in Sustainability’ programme focuses on the sustainability strategic areas common to the European Union (EU) Commission’s European Green Deal and Singapore’s Sustainability Concept Plan.

The programme covers the five areas of:

  • Circular Economy
  • Smart Mobility
  • Clean & Efficient Energy
  • Sustainable Food & Nutrition
  • Green Finance

It has been executed as a series of activities including sharing sessions, the publication of the EuroCham Sustainability Whitebook 2020 and finally, the EuroCham Sustainability Awards 2020. Each of these activities is intended to highlight sustainability best practices, challenges, and opportunities in Singapore, and they have been very warmly welcomed by the European Commission, Singapore government and other key stakeholders.
