EuroCham Singapore releases Position Paper on Clean and Efficient Energy
The European Chamber of Commerce in Singapore (EuroCham) launched a position paper on Clean and Efficient Energy, a key area of EU-Singapore collaboration. The position paper is the final of the four statements compiled as part of the Chamber’s ongoing European Excellence in Sustainability Programme. It will also be published in the forthcoming EuroCham Sustainability Whitebook 2020, to be released on 17 November 2020.
The position paper on Clean and Efficient Energy focuses on energy conservation and energy supply efforts in Singapore and the EU, with particular reference to green buildings. It does so in view of the fact that building and construction accounts for approximately 40% of all carbon emissions. By assessing the developments towards green buildings and utilization of clean and efficient energy in Singapore on one hand and in the European Union (EU) on the other, the position paper offers stakeholders to understand areas of improvement relating to energy demand, supply, measurement, reporting and verification. This understanding is key to establishing an avenue for the development of green buildings in Singapore.
Fact-finding for the position paper involved extensive engagement with government stakeholders and EuroCham members in the space: including an expert group on the topic. Findings indicate a need for improved measurement, reporting and verification in Singapore, as well as improved data analytics. A clear roadmap for harnessing solar energy, as well as improved ecosystem partnerships, are strongly recommended, while an expanded vision of green buildings – beyond the residential and commercial – is imperative.
The position paper notes that The EU and Singapore are in prime position to achieve their targets for attaining green buildings, and encourages further action to be taken in achieving a coordinated ecosystem for clean, efficient energy and greener building.
This is the final position paper released as part of the EuroCham Sustainability Programme; previous papers covered Green Finance, Circular Economy, and Smart Mobility. These position papers are disseminated with a view to facilitating dialogue between European companies and Singaporean authorities and regulators. They are accessible at EuroCham’s website: Clean and Efficient Energy 2020.
