SUMMARY:Human Resources Committee Meeting - The Dark Side of HR
DESCRIPTION:HR managers often engage in discussions about developing people and creating a motivating workplace. However\, HR also has to deal with the dark side of human behaviour and HR professionals need to know what to do when things go beyond the limits of HR policy and labour laws. Harassment\, corruption\, cybercrime\, terrorism\, bosses and employees from hell… HR gets it all. \nIn this session\, we are happy to have a guest speaker who has deep familiarity with the dark side. Mr Calum Lawrie\, was a Scotland Yard Detective in the UK before setting up his business as a specialist in HR forensics in Singapore\, Principal Investigator with Playfair Investigations. Calum will share with our Committee how specialists think and act when faced with criminal and terrorist issues in companies. Walter van Hattum holds MAs in Political Economy and Development as well as an MBA (Heriot-Watt). He is the 2015 Visiting Fulbright Scholar at Stanford University. \nHis research interests encompass digital and Internet finance\, digital banking\, Asia finance\, impact investing\, blockchain\, financial inclusion and asset allocation. During his time as a Fulbright Scholar at Shorenstein APARC\, his research focused on harnessing Silicon Valley technology for connectivity and financial inclusion in ASEAN and Singapore. \nDavid is also an Independent Director of two SGX-listed companies and sits on the Investment Committee and Council of two charitable organizations. He is the Vice President of the Economic Society of Singapore.  He was the Founding Vice Chairman of the Alternative Investment Management Association (Singapore Chapter)\, a member of the SGX Security Committee\, and MAS Financial Research Council.  He was also the Group Managing Director of OUE Limited and Auric Pacific Limited\, as well as the Non-Executive Chairman of MAP Technology Limited. \nProfessor LEE speaks frequently in international conferences around the world with occasional appearances in Bloomberg\, Reuters and Channel NewsAsia.  He has published in Financial Analyst Journal\, Journal of Financial Perspective\, Journal of Investing\, Journal of Wealth Management\, Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation\, Applied Financial Economics\, and several books and chapters on Household Economics and Hedge Funds.  His two books on Asia Finance focus on Banking\, Sovereign Wealth Funds\, REITs\, Financial Trading & Markets\, and Fund Performance. The meeting will feature a presentation by Dr. Thomas Hufnagel\, Partner at Luther LLP\, on “Singapore’s Competition Law Rules: “white”\, “grey” and “black” areas of competitive behaviour”.  \nOnce pretty much unheard of in Asia\, competition law is constantly gaining traction in the region – even though many countries are still characterized by SOEs\, mighty conglomerates and oligopolistic structures. \nThe presentation will be followed by a discussion with members. \n\nDr. Thomas Hufnagel is Partner at Luther LLP\, Singapore. Since August 2007 Thomas Hufnagel has been a partner with Luther\, based at their Singapore office. Prior to joining Luther\, Thomas spent 11 years with the German chemical company BASF\, holding various positions in Legal\, Management Consulting\, HR and as Assistant to the CEO. From 1999 to 2003 Thomas was based in Singapore as head of BASF’s regional legal department responsible for South and South East Asia as well as ANZ. Thomas primarily advises European clients in South and South East Asia on their corporate and commercial activities. Besides focusing on M&A and the structuring of cross-border activities\, he effectively performs the role of an in-house consultant for many clients\, working in close cooperation with the clients’ management teams in Asia and Europe. With regard to this context\, Ms. Alicia Garcia Herrero will provide to members her analyze on ASEAN’s economic outlook for 2016\, given the possible need for the region to raise rates to defend their currencies and putting additionally pressures on growth and corporate. \nAlicia Garcia Herrero is Chief Economist for Asia Pacific at NATIXIS based in Hong Kong. In previous years Alicia held the following positions: Chief Economist for Emerging Markets at Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA)\, Member of the Asian Research Program at the Bank of International Settlements (BIS)\, Head of the International Economy Division of the Bank of Spain\, Member of the Counsel to the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB)\, Head of Emerging Economies at the Research Department of Banco Santander and Economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Mr. Caillaud was responsible for the setup and management of the Yangon office of the firm. In parallel\, Mr. Caillaud was President of the French-Myanmar Chamber of Commerce. Prior to joining the corporate sector\, Mr. Caillaud spent periods as a Parliamentary Assistant in the French Senate and as an Analyst with the French Embassy in Myanmar\, the French Ministry of Defence and the Cambodian Ministry of Justice. \n Mr. Alexander Bohusch is  General Manager at Luther LLP Yangon. Mr. Bohusch spent longer periods of time and part of his practical legal training in\, inter alia\, Singapore\, the Philippines and Malaysia.  He has worked for Luther in Singapore as a “Registered Foreign Lawyer” since April 2010. DESCRIPTION:On the 21st of October\, the Regional Trade Committee will be meeting.  \nThe theme of the meeting will be ‘What to Expect in practice from the Megatrends in International Trade: the AEC\, the TPP\, the RCEP\, and the TFA’. \nThis meeting will feature a presentation by Ms. Deborah Elms\, Executive Director of the Asian Trade Centre in Singapore. Mr. Raffaele Quarto will then offer his insights and perspective under his capacity of Head of the Economic and Trade section at the EU Delegation to Singapore. \nThe presentations will be followed by Q&A and discussion with our members. \n\n\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n\nDeborah ELMS is Executive Director of the Asian Trade Centre in Singapore. The Asian Trade Centre works with governments and businesses to create better trade policy for Asia. \nShe is also a senior fellow in the Singapore Ministry of Trade and Industry’s Trade Academy. Previously\, she was head of the Temasek Foundation Centre for Trade & Negotiations (TFCTN) and senior fellow of international political economy at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Nanyang Technological University\, Singapore. Her research interests are negotiations and decision making\, and her current research involves the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)\, Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP)\, and ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) negotiations and global value chains. She has provided consulting on a range of trade issues to governments including the United Arab Emirates\, Sri Lanka\, Cambodia\, Taiwan\, and Singapore. Dr. Elms received a PhD in political science from the University of Washington\, a MA in international relations from the University of Southern California\, and bachelor’s degrees from Boston University. \n  \n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n\n\n\n  \n  \n  \n\n\nMr Raffaele Quarto is currently Head of the Economic and Trade section at the EU Delegation to Singapore.\nBefore this\, he was Trade Policy Coordinator in the Directorate General for Trade in Brussels\, where he was responsible for trade and investment relations with Indonesia\, Brunei and East Timor. DESCRIPTION:Event DetailsOn the 10th of July\, the HR Committee will convene for a special meeting with H.E. Dr. Michael Pulch\, European Union Ambassador to Singapore.\nThe theme of this meeting is ASEAN Policy & Human Capital. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with H.E Dr Michael Pulch and discuss how European companies can contribute to policies in building human capital and business leaders in ASEAN.\nThe purpose of this meeting is to exchange on policy priorities for ASEAN with the EU Ambassador\, and to understand the diplomatic dimension of developing a regional framework for human development.\nIn addition\, preliminary results from the EuroCham Survey of HR directors for the White Paper will be presented. \nAbout the Ambassador\n \nDr Michael Pulch is the European Union Ambassador to Singapore.\nBefore his arrival in Singapore in September 2013\, Dr Pulch headed the Russia Division in the European External Action Service (EEAS) in Brussels\, where he coordinated EU policies on Russia and chaired the EU Interservice Group on Russia. Prior to that from 2006 to 2011 he was posted to Beijing as Deputy Chief of Mission of the EU Delegation to China\, in charge of EU policies on China and relations with Mongolia.\nDr Pulch entered the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1986\, serving in the United Nations Directorate\, before he was attached to the German embassy in Seoul as political officer. During his posting to Washington as deputy head of the Economic Section he covered economic aspects of security policy.\nIn 1995 Dr Pulch joined the US Division of the European Commission in Brussels focussing on US foreign and security policy. From 1999 to 2003\, he was posted to the EU Delegation in Tokyo\, where he headed the Trade and Commerce Section that defines EU trade policy objectives for Japan. As deputy head of the European Commission’s East Asia Division in Brussels until 2006 he worked on political and economic aspects of EU relations with countries in the Far East/Australasia region. He also co-authored the EU’s first East Asia Policy Guidelines.\nDr Pulch holds degrees in law and political sciences from the universities of Bonn\, Paris and Cambridge. He received honorary citizenships of the State of Tennessee and the City of Little Rock\, Arkansas.He speaks English\, German\, French and Dutch.\n \nAbout the HR Committee \nThe HR Committee aims to represent the common interests of the European business community concerning human resources\, talent and leadership. DESCRIPTION:Event Details \nOn the 7th of July\, the Regional Trade Committee will be meeting.\nOur guest speaker Chris Humphrey\, Executive Director of the EU-ASEAN Business Council will be presenting on the ASEAN Economic Community and the findings of Non-Tariff Barriers hindering taxation and trade across the region. The findings encompass trade barriers faced by a variety of industries such as food & beverage\, electronics\, logistics\, manufacturing\, mining\, semiconductors and telecommunications.\nMr. Humphrey will also be presenting about the present state of the AEC\, followed by a discussion on the post-2015 agenda\, as well as discussing about what the ASEAN Business Advisory Council has been working on as a response from the private sector. Particular focus will be on Human Capital and Non-Tariff Barriers. The Committee will also provide updates on the Market Access paper that was the successful publishing of an industry study of companies with operations in Singapore and the region.\nAbout the speaker\n\nChris Humphrey is the Executive Director of the EU-ASEAN Business Council with more than a decade of experience running business units throughout Asia\, and over 20 years of experience of either working for or dealing with Governments and regulatory authorities.\nChris began his varied professional career as a UK Civil Servant where\, amongst other things\, he was a Private Secretary to a Minister and an Air Services Trade Negotiator covering the Asia Pacific Region. After leaving Government\, he moved to the private sector working mainly in China and Hong Kong. SUMMARY:Sustainability Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Sustainability Committee will be meeting on the 25 June 2015. The Committee will be meeting with representatives of regional embassies to present and discuss on the Sustainability Position Paper on “Degradable Packaging & Plastic Ban as a solution to Littering”. Embassy representatives will also receive the latest updates on the views and recommendations of the European business community in Singapore.About the committee\nThe EuroCham Sustainability Committee brings together ideas and expertise from a myriad of industries to tackle issues relating to the long term sustainability of firms. Europe as a whole has always been a key proponent in sustainable business practices and with a steady increase in European companies in Singapore\, there is a need for the Committee to achieve a consistent brand of European excellence in sustainability.\nThe Committee comprises industry leaders such as Alstom Power\, Asia Pacific Breweries\, CBRE\, Fraunhofer\, Grant Thornton International and Schneider Electric\, among many others.
