SUMMARY:Official Launch of The Illicit Trade Environment Index by the Economist Intelligence Unit
DESCRIPTION:Official Launch of The Illicit Trade Environment Index by the Economist Intelligence Unit \nIllicit trade of counterfeit good affects all industries and sectors – from luxury brands to pharmaceutical products\, to wildlife\, automotive and alcohol. The World Trade Organization estimates that the value of counterfeit and pirated goods is equivalent to some 7% of the world’s merchandise. \nAs international trade continues to grow\, the opportunities for organized crime increase in tandem as well. These networks are well equipped to identify and exploit discrepancies between national law and international trade routes\, while leveraging on complex technology to assist their trafficking operations. \nOn the 12th of October\, EuroCham successfully launched the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Report on the “Illicit Trade Environment Index”\, commissioned by EuroCham’s Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Committee. \nEuroCham’s IPR Committee has been working hard through the sharing of best practices in mitigating illicit trade activity through working groups and events exploring other facets of organized crime. While efforts have not proved futile\, the Committee believes that more can be addressed and be done to protect consumers and businesses alike. This index will prove as a useful tool for engaging in productive discussions with relevant authorities and stakeholders to achieve greater impetus for action. \nFind out more about the IPR Committee here. \n\nProgramme \n8.30 – 9.00am: \nCoffee and Networking Session \n9.00 – 11.00am: \nOpening remarks by Ms. Lina Baechtiger\, Executive Director\, European Chamber of Commerce\, Singapore \nPresentation 1: “The Illicit Trade Environment Index” by Mr. Chris Clague\, Senior Editor\, Thought Leadership\, The Economist Intelligence Unit \nPresentation 2: Recommendations on Control of Illicit Trade within FTZs by Mr. Simon Jim\, Chairman\, Intellectual Property Rights Committee\, European Chamber of Commerce\, Singapore \nQ&A Session \n\nAbout the Speakers \nMr. Christopher Clague: Senior Editor\, Thought Leadership\, The Economist Intelligence Unit \nMr. Simon Jim: Chairman\, Intellectual Property Rights Committee\, EuroCham \nMs. Lina Baechtiger: Executive Director\, EuroCham \nMs. Angelia Chew: Partner\, Asia Pacific Trade & Customs Leader\, KPMG \n\nPictures \n \n
