DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to invite you to attend our 2-hours business breakfast to discuss the topic of “Counting and Cutting the Cost of Compliance” with regard to the World Class Austrian regulatory reporting model\, Austrian Reporting Services (or short “AuRep”). \nThe Austrian national bank (OeNB) and the financial institutions in Austria have joined forces and use new technologies to create a new Regulatory Value Chain. The AuRep GmbH is co-owned by eight of the largest Austrian banking groups\, representing 90% of the Austrian bank market and 800 banks. It runs a common software platform based on BearingPoint’s Abacus which works as a central interface between the banks and the OeNB supporting national and international supervisory and statistical reporting. \nThe main drivers for the project were to lighten the compliance burden and to reduce costs and complexity of reporting processes in Austria. Nearly 600 Austrian financial institutions are currently using the platform in Austria which has enabled streamlined communications and aligned processes with the regulatory authority. The AuRep project also equips the participating financial institutions with a flexible and configurable solution to easily adopt new tenants and regulations. \nThe innovative solution increases the efficiency of supervisory processes\, while reducing risk and cost for both\, financial institutions and the regulator. He has been working in consulting\, software development\, accounting standard setting and in academia. \n  \nDr. Johannes Turner \nDirector Statistics Departement Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) \nJohannes Turner is Director Statistics Department of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB)\, which is in charge of compiling and analyzing monetary\, interest rate\, supervisory and external statistics and maintaining the Austrian Central Credit Register. He is a member of the Statistics Committee of the ESCB\, and a representative in the Committee on Monetary\, Financial and Balance of Payments Statistics in Luxembourg (CMFB). Since 2013 Johannes Turner has been representative in the ESF (European Statistical Forum) and since 2016 he has been Vice President of the European Committee of the Central Balance-Sheet Data Offices (ECCBSO). He is an Advisory Board Member of Statistics Austria (NSI) and a member of the ERP (European Recovery Programme) Audit Committee. In 2014/2015 he has been chairing the ECB taskforce for a harmonised reporting framework for banks in Europe. \nHe was promoted to his current position in June 2010 after having worked on banking supervision at the OeNB for 18 years\, ultimately as Head of the Banking Analysis Division from 2008. Assessing the Impact for Investors of the Post-Election Political Transition \nFor the first time since Malaysia’s independence\, UMNO and its coalition Barisan Nasional (BN) have been voted out. The alliance that is taking over power\, Pakatan Harapan (PH)\, brings back together former UMNO stalwarts and then political opponents\, Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Anwar Ibrahim. \nWhile the transition to a new government is progressing smoothly\, the reshuffle of the country’s ruling elite is creating significant uncertainty. It remains unclear to what extent PH will now seek to overturn BN’s policies\, whether in relation to trade\, investment and the economy\, or to the country’s foreign policy including towards China. \nThe seminar will shed light on the political and social dynamics behind the earth-shattering election’s results. It will also provide insights on Malaysia’s new leadership. SUMMARY:ASEAN Sustainable Urbanisation - Briefing by Alphabeta
DESCRIPTION:Picture of the event: \n \nAlphabeta have been appointed by the ASEAN Secretariat to assist with the development of a Sustainable Urbanisation Strategy for ASEAN\, which (a) examines urbanisation trends in ASEAN; (b) does a stocktake of actions currently being pursued around sustainable urbanisation in ASEAN; (c) develops a short-list of priority actions (e.g.\, waste water treatment; affordable housing) that cities could pursue; and (d) develops the implementation roadmap\, including metrics. (see attached or this link). \nTogether with the EU-ASEAN Business Council\, we are organising a briefing session with Alphabeta at 8.30am on Thursday 12th April.  You are warmly invited to provide your initial thoughts and inputs to the development of the strategy during the course of the discussion. \nThe session will:\n– Get perspectives on challenges with implementing urbanisation projects in ASEAN;\n– Ideas on priority opportunities to drive sustainable urbanisation (e.g.\, affordable housing\, closed loop waste systems). \nThe definition of sustainable urbanisation is very broad – includes socioeconomic factors (e.g.\, health\, housing\, traffic congestion)\, environmental (e.g.\, energy efficiency\, water access)\, and governance (e.g.\, cybersecurity) \nAlphabeta will brief on the scope of the project and on some initial concepts. The change in Union Minister has certainly sparked a jolt of energy into a long list of stalled and uncertain projects. Four large LNG to Power projects received Government approval (“NTP”) on the eve of a reboot of Myanmar’s foreign currency and Government guarantee policy. Long stalled hydropower projects are told to get a move on\, and the IFC delivered a brand new Model PPA to the Government. He advised the Government on transactions and privatizations in energy\, telecom and transportation\, drafted the country’s first PPP bill\, now pending before Parliament\, and the regulation on Government guarantees. Edwin assists sponsors and lenders on the large majority of Myanmar IPP projects\, including several of the announced LNG to Power projects\, 8\,000 MW in hydropower IPPs and 1\,000 MW in other renewables. He also co-authored the new Myanmar Model PPA. \nMr Philipp Troesch\, Counsel \nPhilipp is a Swiss qualified lawyer with 15 years of experience in corporate and commercial law. The Asian Trade Centre works with governments and companies to design better trade policies for the region. Dr. Elms sits on the International Technical Advisory Committee of the Global Trade Professionals Alliance and is Chair of the Working Group on Trade Policy and Law. She is also a senior fellow in the Singapore Ministry of Trade and Industry’s Trade Academy. Previously\, Dr Elms was head of the Temasek Foundation Centre for Trade & Negotiations (TFCTN) and Senior Fellow of International Political Economy at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Nanyang Technological University\, Singapore. Her projects include the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations\, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP)\, the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and global value chains. She has provided consulting on a range of trade issues to governments including the United Arab Emirates\, Sri Lanka\, Cambodia\, Taiwan\, and Singapore. Dr. Elms received a PhD in political science from the University of Washington\, a MA in international relations from the University of Southern California\, and bachelor’s degrees from Boston University. SUMMARY:EuroCham Breakfast Dialogue: EuroCham and Singapore partnership in building the next generation of HR.
DESCRIPTION:  \nSummary of event: \nAt the panel dialogue held on the 14th of February\, EuroCham hosted 14 members of the European Parliament (MEPs) at a dialogue on building the next generation of HR professionals\, and understanding what helps Singapore tick when it comes to manpower and labour practices. The session was catered to allow a frank discussion with EuroCham guests and the visiting MEPs about the unique ecosystem of collaborative tripartite partnerships. \nAmong the panellists were representatives from Singapore’s representative labour and manpower bodies including the NTUC\, Institute for Human Resources Professionals (IHRP)\, Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF)\, as well as the former CEO of the Human Capital Leadership Institute (HCLI)\, and representatives of various European companies. The session featured topics on how the EU may impart best practices in HR to Singapore and ASEAN\, less in terms of minimum wage and freedom of association but through vocational training and international mobility. Singapore and the Southeast Asian region may also share about its experience with the contingent workforce and the challenging tasks of attracting and retaining talent. Panellists also shared about how institutes of higher learning will need to be transformed into institutes of continuous learning instead due to the ever-changing nature of industries\, and thus encouraging the workforce to remain skilled and relevant. \n  \n  \nAbout: \n16 Members of the European Parliament from the Friends of Singapore group in the European Parliament will be making a working visit to Singapore at the invitation of the Singapore Government. \nDuring their visit EuroCham\, in collaboration with NTUC\, is hosting this breakfast event with the MEPs\, alongside European businesses based in Singapore.
