SUMMARY:New Voices and Political Choices in the age of Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence\, robotics and machine learning are leaving the pages of science fiction to become part of our lives. Yet\, society tends to regard many new technologies as agents of negative change. Fear – also fuelled by populism – is a real obstacle in embracing these new technologies and reaping their benefits. In this lecture\, European Commissioner for Research\, Science and Innovation – Carlos Moedas – will bring his perspective on the role of politics and political choices in the deployment and adoption of these and other emerging technologies. \n \nCARLOS MOEDAS European Commissioner for Research\, Science and Innovation \nCarlos Moedas is currently Commissioner in charge of Research\, Science and Innovation at the European Commission. He became member of the Commission in 2014. Prior to that\, he was elected for Portugal’s National Parliament and worked from 2011 to 2014 as Secretary of State to the Prime Minister of Portugal in charge of the Portuguese Adjustment Programme. From 2010 to 2011\, he worked as Senior Economic Advisor of the Portuguese Social Democratic Party. In 2008\, he founded his own investment company\, Crimson Investment Management. In 2004\, he became Managing Director of Aguirre Newman and member of the Executive Board of Aguirre Newman in Spain. He has held several key positions in the corporate sector including in mergers and acquisitions at investment bank Goldman Sachs in London. Born in Beja\, Portugal\, in 1970 he graduated in Civil Engineering from the Higher Technical Institute in 1993 and completed his final year of studies at the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris. The aim of the award is to recognise ordinary\, everyday Singaporeans and permanent residents for their extraordinary humanity and compassion towards people\, causes\, and missions. \nThe award is open nation-wide and is presented specifically to individuals who are working silently without recognition or compensation. These are the faceless champions of our society — ordinary humans who have demonstrated extraordinary dedication to improving the lives of their fellow human beings. \nThe fifth anniversary of the Silent Heroes Award will be held at the Island Ballroom of the Shangri-La Hotel on Saturday\, 29th September 2018.
