Every year\, 1.3 billion tons of food is lost worldwide whilst world population is expected to increase by 2 billion people to over 9 billion people. To meet the increased demand for food\, global food production will have to increase by at least 60%\, while at the same time arable land and natural resources are nearing their limits. To address this fundamental concern\, Rabobank is committed to contribute to one of the most pressing issues identified by the UN Sustainable Development Goals to halve food loss by 2030. Against this backdrop\, Rabobank Asia is launching the Food Loss Challenge Asia\, an initiative to facilitate constructive dialogue between solutions providers\, F&A corporates and small holder farmers. \n“As the leading global  bank in food & agri and sustainability\, Rabobank recognizes its responsibility to help address the world’s food challenges of increased demand for food\, changing consumer preferences and the need for sustainable food production \,” says Rabobank Asia CEO Diane Boogaard. “This is why we kick-start the Food Loss Challenge Asia with our partners. The European Union wants to collaborate with Malaysia to find ways to ensure palm oil’s sustainability. Yet\, society tends to regard many new technologies as agents of negative change. Fear – also fuelled by populism – is a real obstacle in embracing these new technologies and reaping their benefits. In this lecture\, European Commissioner for Research\, Science and Innovation – Carlos Moedas – will bring his perspective on the role of politics and political choices in the deployment and adoption of these and other emerging technologies. \n \nCARLOS MOEDAS European Commissioner for Research\, Science and Innovation \nCarlos Moedas is currently Commissioner in charge of Research\, Science and Innovation at the European Commission. He became member of the Commission in 2014. Prior to that\, he was elected for Portugal’s National Parliament and worked from 2011 to 2014 as Secretary of State to the Prime Minister of Portugal in charge of the Portuguese Adjustment Programme. From 2010 to 2011\, he worked as Senior Economic Advisor of the Portuguese Social Democratic Party. In 2008\, he founded his own investment company\, Crimson Investment Management. In 2004\, he became Managing Director of Aguirre Newman and member of the Executive Board of Aguirre Newman in Spain. He has held several key positions in the corporate sector including in mergers and acquisitions at investment bank Goldman Sachs in London. Born in Beja\, Portugal\, in 1970 he graduated in Civil Engineering from the Higher Technical Institute in 1993 and completed his final year of studies at the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris. SUMMARY:The European Union as a Global Actor - RSIS Distinguished Public Lecture by Her Excellency Federica Mogherini
DESCRIPTION:In her first public lecture in Singapore\, the European Union’s foreign policy chief and Vice-President of the European Commission\, H.E. Federica Mogherini\, will engage with students on the EU’s place amidst an increasingly volatile international order and will discuss the ways in which the EU continues to develop enduring partnerships across the globe. The EU High Representative/Vice-President\, who is participating in the ASEAN Regional Forum in Singapore\, will address some of the challenges facing the world today\, including regional conflicts\, nuclear proliferation\, and migration\, as well as the need to defend and support the rules-based multilateral system\, open and fair trade\, and sustainable development. With Singapore currently holding the chairmanship of ASEAN and taking on the role of EU-ASEAN Coordinator in August\, Federica Mogherini will also outline the European Union’s increased engagement with Asian partners over the past years\, particularly on climate change\, connectivity and security\, as well as discuss opportunities for enhanced cooperation in the future. \nAbout the Speaker \nFederica Mogherini is the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission. She has held this position since 1st November 2014. \nShe previously served as the Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs from February to October 2014\, and was elected as a Member of the Italian Parliament in 2008. She was also the Head of the Italian Delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and Vice-President of its Political Committee (2013-2014)\, Secretary of the Defence Committee (2008-2013)\, and member of the Foreign Affairs Committee.
