DESCRIPTION:Image credit: WTO Centre Vietnam\n  \nIntroduction \nEuroCham will host Dr. Deborah Elms from the Asian Trade Centre who will provide an analysis in the most practical terms on RCEP\, member states’ sentiments toward it\, and the impacts it will have on businesses\, both for MNCs and SMEs. \nThis will be a very exciting and informative session as the region navigates around trade pacts and what it means for the region’s economies and geopolitics. \nAbout the speaker \n \n  \nDr. Deborah Elms\, \nExecutive Director\, Asian Trade Centre\nVice Chair\, Asia Business Trade Association \nDr. Deborah Elms is the Founder and Executive Director of the Asian Trade Centre. The Asian Trade Centre works with governments and companies to design better trade policies for the region. Dr. Elms sits on the International Technical Advisory Committee of the Global Trade Professionals Alliance and is Chair of the Working Group on Trade Policy and Law. She is also a senior fellow in the Singapore Ministry of Trade and Industry’s Trade Academy. Previously\, Dr Elms was head of the Temasek Foundation Centre for Trade & Negotiations (TFCTN) and Senior Fellow of International Political Economy at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Nanyang Technological University\, Singapore. Her projects include the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations\, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP)\, the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and global value chains. She has provided consulting on a range of trade issues to governments including the United Arab Emirates\, Sri Lanka\, Cambodia\, Taiwan\, and Singapore. Dr. Elms received a PhD in political science from the University of Washington\, a MA in international relations from the University of Southern California\, and bachelor’s degrees from Boston University. Dr Elms publishes the Talking Trade Blog. \nAsian Trade Centre \nThe Asian Trade Centre (ATC) is the premier regional thought leader\, advocate and educator for trade in Asia. The session was catered to allow a frank discussion with EuroCham guests and the visiting MEPs about the unique ecosystem of collaborative tripartite partnerships. \nAmong the panellists were representatives from Singapore’s representative labour and manpower bodies including the NTUC\, Institute for Human Resources Professionals (IHRP)\, Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF)\, as well as the former CEO of the Human Capital Leadership Institute (HCLI)\, and representatives of various European companies. The session featured topics on how the EU may impart best practices in HR to Singapore and ASEAN\, less in terms of minimum wage and freedom of association but through vocational training and international mobility. DESCRIPTION:Summary of event\nEuroCham hosted a presentation by Ms. Rachele Forcardi\, senior VP at Universum where she presented the findings of a global survey conducted by Universum on the attitudes of the Generation Z. Defined as youths between the ages of 14 and 19\, these individuals expressed a shocking view on their use of social media\, career goals\, and entrepreneurship. \nThe results of the survey proved to be a worrying trend for governments\, employers\, and universities where these youths had expressed increased scepticism of the value of a university degree as compared to hands-on experience and life achievements. SUMMARY:EuroCham Breakfast: General Data Protection Regulation
DESCRIPTION:SUMMARY OF EVENT \nEuroCham hosted a session on the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that comes into force on 25th May 2018. Mr. Bruno Gencarelli\, Head of Unit in charge of international data flows and consumer protection at the European Commission\, gave the audience an explanation of this regulation that impacts all companies that (will) have business dealings with clients based in the EU. The presentation was followed by a panel debate moderated by Mr. Jonathan Kok\, Head of RHTLaw Wessing’s Intellectual Property & Technology Practice\, during which Mr. Gencarelli and Mr. Tan Shong Ye\, Partner at PWC Risk Services\, further discussed the implications of the GDPR for businesses in Singapore and Asia. \nMr. Gencarelli started by explaining the three main reasons for establishing a new European framework on data protection: technological developments and globalisation\, constitutionalisation of the fundamental right to data protection\, and fragmentation of the legislative framework with different translations of the previous directive into national laws. Implementing a harmonised and simplified framework with one single set of data protection rules for the EU that creates an equal level playing field and cuts the red tape was therefore unavoidable and much needed. The new framework offers rules that are fit for the digital single market\, puts individuals in control of their own data and ensures a modern data protection governance system. Instead of treating data based on a ‘one size fits all’ approach\, it is treated based on the risks they impose from a privacy point of view. \nMr. Gencarelli emphasised that high standards of data protection contribute to free\, secure and competitive trade flows. He pointed out that the European Commission is doing everything it can to make the transition period as smooth as possible for companies affected by the regulation. The EU’s webpage on the GDPR offers a one-stop-shop for companies to find out everything they need to know in the first stage of implementation as well as thereafter. He was in charge of the Commission’s work in the area of data protection in the decisive years of the legislative reform and the EU-US negotiations. In that capacity\, he led the Commission’s delegation in the interinstitutional negotiations with the European Parliament and the Council that resulted in the adoption of the EU data protection reform (“General Regulation” and “Police Directive”). He was also one of the lead negotiators of the EU-US Privacy Shield and  “Umbrella Agreement”. Mr Gencarelli previously served as a member of the European Commission’s Legal Service and as an assistant (référendaire) to a judge at the European Court of Justice after having practiced law in the private sector. He holds degrees in law and political science\, and teaches EU Competition Law at Sciences Po Paris.
