SUMMARY:SGC Business Luncheon: Safety and Security: How Do Hotels Keep you Safe?
DESCRIPTION:Special Luncheon hosted by the Singapore-German Chamber of Commerce\n2017’s headlines read of financial crisis\, natural disasters and man-made incidents. 2018 may not be very different. During such turbulent times\, planning ahead has never been more important. Yet the plans are not fool-proof as we have seen from many examples. Since September 11\, 2011\, the aggregate attacks on hotels have increased four-folds. Straddling between hospitality and safety of the guests\, associates and assets\, there rises a greater need to put in place defense mechanisms within the hotel environments. \nGuest speaker: \n \nMr. Danny Chan \nRegional Director APAC\, Global Safety and Security\, Marriott Inc \nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:HR Committee meeting with Universum
DESCRIPTION:Summary of event\nEuroCham hosted a presentation by Ms. Rachele Forcardi\, senior VP at Universum where she presented the findings of a global survey conducted by Universum on the attitudes of the Generation Z. Defined as youths between the ages of 14 and 19\, these individuals expressed a shocking view on their use of social media\, career goals\, and entrepreneurship. \nThe results of the survey proved to be a worrying trend for governments\, employers\, and universities where these youths had expressed increased scepticism of the value of a university degree as compared to hands-on experience and life achievements. As an emerging generation that are presently in high school faced with the choice of entering university and participating in the workforce afterward\, a large portion of those surveyed had a positive view on doing good rather than making more money\, if and when such a dichotomy exists. \nTo find out more about this interesting study and to view the results\, please contact the corporate affairs manager Mr. Elgin Seah at elgin.seah@eurocham.org.sg. \n \n  \nSynopsis \nThis event is an opportunity for HR professionals to get an insider’s view of a new global study conducted by Universum with 50\,000 members of the Gen Z generation. What will interest EuroCham members is the ASEAN regional study showing country-by-country attitudes to work\, to education\, to corporate careers and entrepreneurship and to technology. \nThe format of this meeting will be a presentation of the study and dialogue with HR and higher education professionals about how to prepare for the next generation in Asia. \nSpeaker: \nRachele Focardi is Senior Vice President for APAC at Universum\, a leading  Employer Branding and Talent Strategy company. Rachele is a regular contributor to EuroCham’s HR Committee and is a well-known thought leader in Asia on questions of Employer Branding\, Talent Strategy and how to harmonize a Multi-generational Workforce. \n  \nThis event is open only to EuroCham members.

SUMMARY:EuroCham Breakfast: General Data Protection Regulation
DESCRIPTION:SUMMARY OF EVENT \nEuroCham hosted a session on the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that comes into force on 25th May 2018. Mr. Bruno Gencarelli\, Head of Unit in charge of international data flows and consumer protection at the European Commission\, gave the audience an explanation of this regulation that impacts all companies that (will) have business dealings with clients based in the EU. The presentation was followed by a panel debate moderated by Mr. Jonathan Kok\, Head of RHTLaw Wessing’s Intellectual Property & Technology Practice\, during which Mr. Gencarelli and Mr. Tan Shong Ye\, Partner at PWC Risk Services\, further discussed the implications of the GDPR for businesses in Singapore and Asia. \nMr. Gencarelli started by explaining the three main reasons for establishing a new European framework on data protection: technological developments and globalisation\, constitutionalisation of the fundamental right to data protection\, and fragmentation of the legislative framework with different translations of the previous directive into national laws. Implementing a harmonised and simplified framework with one single set of data protection rules for the EU that creates an equal level playing field and cuts the red tape was therefore unavoidable and much needed. The new framework offers rules that are fit for the digital single market\, puts individuals in control of their own data and ensures a modern data protection governance system. Instead of treating data based on a ‘one size fits all’ approach\, it is treated based on the risks they impose from a privacy point of view. \nMr. Gencarelli emphasised that high standards of data protection contribute to free\, secure and competitive trade flows. He pointed out that the European Commission is doing everything it can to make the transition period as smooth as possible for companies affected by the regulation. The EU’s webpage on the GDPR offers a one-stop-shop for companies to find out everything they need to know in the first stage of implementation as well as thereafter. Also with regards to international transfers\, new toolkits have been introduced. \nDuring the panel debate a range of topics were discussed including the implications of the GDPR for companies with different levels of operations in the EU\, flexibility of the regulation in light of technological developments and responsibilities of national data protection authorities of EU Member States. \nEuroCham looks back on an informative and insightful session and would like to thank Mr. Gencarelli\, Mr. Tan\, and Mr. Kok warmly for their valuable contributions. \nClick here for our upcoming events! \n \n \n \nSPEAKERS and MODERATOR \nMr Bruno Gencarelli\,\nHead of Unit in charge of international data flows and protection and consumer at the European Commission \nMr Tan Shong Ye\,\nPartner at PricewaterhouseCoopers Risk Services Pte Ltd \nModerator\, Mr Jonathan Kok\,\nHead of RHTLaw Wessing’s Intellectual Property & Technology Practice \n  \nSYNOPSIS \nMr Bruno Gencarellli\, Head of  Unit in charge of international data flows and protection and consumer at the European Commission will be visiting Singapore. SUMMARY:EuroCham Breakfast Talks: Disruptive Innovation and Regulation: Friend or Foe?
DESCRIPTION:SUMMARY OF EVENT \nIn the age of the digital economy\, technological advances and disruptors play a major role in shaping society. At the breakfast talk with the Warren Tseng\, General Manager of Uber\, Zann Kwan\, CEO of Bitcoin Exchange\, and Professor Tan Chorh Chuan of the Ministry of Health discussed how disruptive innovation is a force for good despite industry having to endure some shakeups. The Singapore government in this aspect has been very encouraging towards innovative industries and have reacted positively about the impacts on transportation\, banking\, and healthcare. \nAfter all\, as Nele Cornelis\, Executive Director of EuroCham having quoted the famed author Amit Kalantri\, the “Telephone did not come into existence from the persistent improvement of the postcard”. Disruptive innovation may be the way forward but understanding the perspectives of both the regulator and innovator is important to appreciate the rationale behind certain actions\, and that disruptive change cannot be evaluated in a vacuum\, nor disregarded. \n \nSYNOPSIS: \nNew technologies or business models can profoundly shake the functioning of existing industries and bring societal changes. As the OECD notes\, these disruptive innovations can deliver important benefits to competition and consumers and can stimulate innovation and price competition from established providers. However\, they can also give rise to legitimate public policy concerns and create demands for regulation. In such an environment\, what are the potential market impacts of disruptive innovation\, and how are regulators responding? \nThis Breakfast Talk\, hosted by the European Chamber of Commerce\, brings together industry thought leaders\, technology experts and policy makers for a discussion around the impact of disruptive technologies on regulatory and policy objectives and collaborative innovations. \nCentral themes to the discussion will be the potential benefits of disruptive innovation and the role of regulation and its impact of innovation. Panellists will also be addressing the relationship between the technology cycle and the regulatory cycle. Finally\, presenters will offer their insights into how\, in an increasingly fractured\, but also globalized world\, the industry can derive the potential benefits of disruptive technology\, working in a collaborative way. \nEVENT: \n8:15AM: Registration\n8:40AM: Guests be seated\, breakfasts serving begins\n8:45AM: Opening Remarks\n8:50AM: Breakfast Talk: Disruptive innovation and impacts on regulation and policy\n9:50AM: Discussion and Q&A\n10:30AM: Close & Networking \nSPEAKERS: \nProfessor Tan Chorh Chuan\, Executive Director at Office for Healthcare Transformation & Chief Health Scientist\, Ministry of Health \nZann Kwan\, CEO at Bitcoin Exchange Pte Ltd \nWarren Tseng\, General Manager (Singapore & Malaysia)\, Uber\n \nProfessor David Chan\, Professor of Psychology and Director of the Behavioural Sciences Institute at the Singapore Management University (Moderator) \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS:\n \nTAN CHORH CHUAN\nCHIEF HEALTH SCIENTIST & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR\, OFFICE FOR HEALTHCARE TRANSFORMATION \nProfessor Tan Chorh Chuan is the inaugural Chief Health Scientist and concurrently Executive Director of the Office for Healthcare Transformation the Ministry of Health (MOH). \nProfessor Tan served as President of the National University of Singapore and held the positions of NUS Provost\, then Senior Deputy President and Dean of the NUS Faculty of Medicine. SUMMARY:Economic Outlook 2018 – Is the future as cryptic as it seems?
DESCRIPTION:The SwissCham event series in the New Year will kick off once again with the traditional Economic Outlook event.
