DESCRIPTION:Heated debates have surrounded the palm oil sector due to its implications on society\, environment and economic growth of developing countries. The European Union wants to collaborate with Malaysia to find ways to ensure palm oil’s sustainability. More than ever before\, it is important to guarantee sustainability at every level of the supply chain\, for large and small producers. DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence\, robotics and machine learning are leaving the pages of science fiction to become part of our lives. Yet\, society tends to regard many new technologies as agents of negative change. Fear – also fuelled by populism – is a real obstacle in embracing these new technologies and reaping their benefits. In this lecture\, European Commissioner for Research\, Science and Innovation – Carlos Moedas – will bring his perspective on the role of politics and political choices in the deployment and adoption of these and other emerging technologies. \n \nCARLOS MOEDAS European Commissioner for Research\, Science and Innovation \nCarlos Moedas is currently Commissioner in charge of Research\, Science and Innovation at the European Commission. He became member of the Commission in 2014. Prior to that\, he was elected for Portugal’s National Parliament and worked from 2011 to 2014 as Secretary of State to the Prime Minister of Portugal in charge of the Portuguese Adjustment Programme. From 2010 to 2011\, he worked as Senior Economic Advisor of the Portuguese Social Democratic Party. In 2008\, he founded his own investment company\, Crimson Investment Management. In 2004\, he became Managing Director of Aguirre Newman and member of the Executive Board of Aguirre Newman in Spain. He has held several key positions in the corporate sector including in mergers and acquisitions at investment bank Goldman Sachs in London. Born in Beja\, Portugal\, in 1970 he graduated in Civil Engineering from the Higher Technical Institute in 1993 and completed his final year of studies at the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris. DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nEuroCham hosted the Laos Ministry of Finance on a working visit organised by EuroCham Laos and the EU Delegation to Lao PDR. \nLed by Mr Bryan Fornari\, Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Lao PDR and Mr Jack Sheehan\, Vice President of EuroCham Laos and Chairman of the Tax committee\, the delegation from the Lao Ministry of Finance headed by Director-General Mr Phouthanouphet Saysombath were on a working visit to learn about the engagements between EuroCham Singapore and the Singapore government agencies in matters relating to regional tax\, finance\, and budget. The meeting also discussed how the Singapore government organises consultation and engagement sessions with industry to provide legislative updates so companies can stay abreast of the latest developments. \nThis includes briefing sessions with guest speakers from the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS)\, Economic Development Board (EDB)\, as well as the Ministry of Finance annual call for feedback to the public on the Singapore Budget. Past topics that were presented included Singapore’s BEPS Action 5 Framework and the IP Development Incentives\, and transfer pricing developments. SUMMARY:EuroCham Roundtable discussion: Counting and Cutting the Cost of Regulatory Reporting - World class made in Austria
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to invite you to attend our 2-hours business breakfast to discuss the topic of “Counting and Cutting the Cost of Compliance” with regard to the World Class Austrian regulatory reporting model\, Austrian Reporting Services (or short “AuRep”). \nThe Austrian national bank (OeNB) and the financial institutions in Austria have joined forces and use new technologies to create a new Regulatory Value Chain. The AuRep GmbH is co-owned by eight of the largest Austrian banking groups\, representing 90% of the Austrian bank market and 800 banks. It runs a common software platform based on BearingPoint’s Abacus which works as a central interface between the banks and the OeNB supporting national and international supervisory and statistical reporting. \nThe main drivers for the project were to lighten the compliance burden and to reduce costs and complexity of reporting processes in Austria. Nearly 600 Austrian financial institutions are currently using the platform in Austria which has enabled streamlined communications and aligned processes with the regulatory authority. The AuRep project also equips the participating financial institutions with a flexible and configurable solution to easily adopt new tenants and regulations. \nThe innovative solution increases the efficiency of supervisory processes\, while reducing risk and cost for both\, financial institutions and the regulator. For the last 10 years\, he has been specializing in the areas of digitalization\, regulation and Big Data especially in the financial services sector. In his role\, Maciej is responsible to deliver services and solutions to regulatory clients such as banks\, insurance companies\, central banks and supervisory authorities in the areas of regulatory reporting\, regulatory management and regulatory analytics. Maciej deals with regulations such as Basel 3\, Solvency 2\, IFRSs\, MiFID but also implements standards such as XBRL or SDMX. \nDuring his career\, Maciej has been working with a number of regulators worldwide such as Deutsche Bundesbank\, the European Banking Authority\, the European Central Bank\, the Polish Central Bank\, the SEC in the US\, Japan’s FSA\, the Chinese Ministry of Finance. He was also working with a number of large banks\, insurers and listed companies. He has been working in consulting\, software development\, accounting standard setting and in academia. \n  \nDr. Johannes Turner \nDirector Statistics Departement Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) \nJohannes Turner is Director Statistics Department of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB)\, which is in charge of compiling and analyzing monetary\, interest rate\, supervisory and external statistics and maintaining the Austrian Central Credit Register. He is a member of the Statistics Committee of the ESCB\, and a representative in the Committee on Monetary\, Financial and Balance of Payments Statistics in Luxembourg (CMFB). Since 2013 Johannes Turner has been representative in the ESF (European Statistical Forum) and since 2016 he has been Vice President of the European Committee of the Central Balance-Sheet Data Offices (ECCBSO). He is an Advisory Board Member of Statistics Austria (NSI) and a member of the ERP (European Recovery Programme) Audit Committee. In 2014/2015 he has been chairing the ECB taskforce for a harmonised reporting framework for banks in Europe. \nHe was promoted to his current position in June 2010 after having worked on banking supervision at the OeNB for 18 years\, ultimately as Head of the Banking Analysis Division from 2008. Johannes Turner holds a Master’s degree and a Ph.D. in business administration from the University of Vienna. \n  \n

SUMMARY:The European Union as a Global Actor - RSIS Distinguished Public Lecture by Her Excellency Federica Mogherini
DESCRIPTION:In her first public lecture in Singapore\, the European Union’s foreign policy chief and Vice-President of the European Commission\, H.E. Federica Mogherini\, will engage with students on the EU’s place amidst an increasingly volatile international order and will discuss the ways in which the EU continues to develop enduring partnerships across the globe. The EU High Representative/Vice-President\, who is participating in the ASEAN Regional Forum in Singapore\, will address some of the challenges facing the world today\, including regional conflicts\, nuclear proliferation\, and migration\, as well as the need to defend and support the rules-based multilateral system\, open and fair trade\, and sustainable development. With Singapore currently holding the chairmanship of ASEAN and taking on the role of EU-ASEAN Coordinator in August\, Federica Mogherini will also outline the European Union’s increased engagement with Asian partners over the past years\, particularly on climate change\, connectivity and security\, as well as discuss opportunities for enhanced cooperation in the future. \nAbout the Speaker \nFederica Mogherini is the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission. She has held this position since 1st November 2014. \nShe previously served as the Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs from February to October 2014\, and was elected as a Member of the Italian Parliament in 2008. She was also the Head of the Italian Delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and Vice-President of its Political Committee (2013-2014)\, Secretary of the Defence Committee (2008-2013)\, and member of the Foreign Affairs Committee.
