SUMMARY:Europe Day Luncheon Celebration 2014
DESCRIPTION:On the 5th of May 2014\, EuroCham celebrated the 64th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration of 1950 that led to the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community and subsequently of the European Union. The prestigious luncheon was attended by about 200 guests\, including Singaporean government representatives\, CEOs and managing directors of major European and Singaporean companies\, the diplomatic circle and the media.EuroCham is delighted to welcome Mr. Lim Hng Kiang as a guest of honour and speaker at this year’s Europe Day Luncheon. As the current Minister of Trade and Industry and due to his outstanding experience in various governmental bodies as the MND\, MFA\, MOF\, MOH\, and PMO\, we are looking forward to new insights in issues that are of high relevance for the EU and Singapore.\nThe Europe Day Luncheon is one of the annual highlights of the European Chamber of Commerce\, Singapore (EuroCham). This Europe Day\, EuroCham welcomed Mr. Lim Hng Kiang\, Minister of Trade and Industry\, to address a high-level audience with a key note speech\, followed by a question and answer session.

DESCRIPTION:On 7th March 2014\, EuroCham was pleased to present you with a Breakfast Talk on the key challenges confronting the economic environment in Europe\, with particular emphasis on the crisis of the periphery countries. Professor Gonzalo Garland (IE Business School) discussed the current situation in Europe from a general perspective\, while addressing different countries outlining whether in succession of the long freeze a slow thaw is under way for the European Economy. The talk also provided insights about issues regarding the architecture of the euro and exhibit the main challenges that the euro zone and the European Union are facing in the short and long run.

Mr. Siim Kallas\, European Commissioner for Transport who shared his views on the objectives to enhance political\, technical and industrial cooperation between ASEAN and the EU in the aviation sector which will generate market efficiencies and significant economic benefits for consumers. The audience was able to gather information on what the regional business wishes and what European companies can do for ASEAN to develop a fully integrated transport sector. During the talk\, the Commissioner offered to be part of potential future meetings with specific transport industries such as the shipping industry in order to further strengthen relations between the European Union and Singapore with regard to transportation and logistics.

Director Russo is also keen to seek business feedback on opportunities for EU-Singapore cooperation in Research\, Development and Innovation (RD&I) especially on ICT\, Energy and Biotech sectors.Hurry up and sign up as places are limited and will be given on a first come first serve basis!\nMaria Cristina Russo was appointed Director for International Cooperation in DG Research and Innovation on the 1st July 2013. She leads the efforts of the European Commission to foster research and innovation cooperation with international partners in order to: strengthen the EU’s scientific excellence and attractiveness; foster its industrial competitiveness; tackle global societal challenges; and support the EU’s external policies\, including trade\, development\, enlargement\, etc.\nFrom 2010-2013 she served in DG Health and Consumer Affairs as the Head of Unit for “Financial Services and Redress”. During 2004-2010 she served within the Secretariat General of the Commission as a Head of Unit\, where she was responsible for the units in charge of “Relations with the Council-Coreper I”\, “Co-decision” and “Strategic Objective Security and Justice”.\nFrom 1999-2004 she served as a member of the Cabinet of Philippe Busquin\, Commissioner for Research. From 1995-1999\, she was a Policy Officer in the Secretariat General in the unit responsible for “Relations with the Council-Coreper I”. She joined the European Commission in 1992 as a Policy Officer in DG External Relations\, dealing with “Relations with the New Independent States of the Former Soviet Union”. Maria Cristina studied Political Sciences at the Luiss University of Rome and has a Master’s Degree in European Studies and a Research Master’s from the College of Bruges.\nThe presentation will be followed by a discussion and networking.\nTime: 8.30am – 9.30am

Mr Algirdas ŠEMETA\nEU Commissioner for Taxation\, Customs\, Anti-Fraud and Audit\n\n \nThe European Commissioner for taxation\, customs\, anti-fraud\, budgetary discharge and audit\, Mr. Šemeta is responsible for policies that can actively contribute to developing a highly competitive\, social market economy which fully exploits the benefits of the internal market. SUMMARY:Singapore Schuman Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Singapore Schuman Lecture series is the flagship event of the European Chamber of Commerce in Singapore. It is held annually in Singapore with the support of the European Union. \nFor each Lecture Series held\, EuroCham welcomes a different European personality each time to address a high-level audience with a key note speech followed by a question and answers session. The event takes place in form of a prestigious gala dinner and welcomes about 300 distinguished guests\, including Singaporean government representatives\, foreign ambassadors\, CEOs and managing directors of major European and local companies. \nThe speaker is invited to share his or her views on the role of Europe and its individual member countries\, as well as their relations with Singapore and the other ASEAN countries. \nThe Singapore Schuman Lecture series is named after the former French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman whose famous “Schuman Declaration” led to the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community in 1951. \nThe first edition of the Schuman Lecture Series welcomed Mr. Romano Prodi\, former President of the European Commission and former Prime Minister of Italy\, the second edition welcomed Mrs. Christine Lagarde\, former French Minister for Economics\, Finance and Industry\, and the third edition welcomed Lord Peter Mandelson\, former UK Secretary of State for Business\, First Secretary of State and EU Trade Commissioner. The fourth session welcomed Mr. Pascal Lamy\, former Director-General of the World Trade Organization\, while our fifth edition hosted H.E. Herman Van Rompuy\, President of the European Council. We welcomed Mr. Jean-Claude Trichet\, former President of the European Central Bank\, for our sixth edition in April 2015.

DESCRIPTION:After a successful talk with Mr Gerard Forlin\, Queen’s Counsel\, who shared his views with EuroCham Members on International Regulatory Trends\, the UK Bribery Act and recent anti-corruption regulations of the European Commission\, EuroCham has arranged another Breakfast Talk where Mr Forlin will cover some of the same topics and he will also share his broad knowledge on topics related to health\, safety and environmental trends in the European Union\, the UK and the Asia Pacific region. \nThe speaker: Mr. Gerard Forlin QC \n \nGerard Forlin was educated at Trinity Hall\, University of Cambridge\, and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He was called to the Bar by Lincoln’s Inn and appointed Queen’s Counsel (QC) in 2010 in both Civil and Criminal Law. Mark Boleat Chairman of the City of London’s policy committee will be presenting. Mark is currently Chairman of the Channel Islands Competition and Regulatory Authorities and the States of Jersey Development Company. He is also a former director-general of the Association of British Insurers\, Building Societies Association and Council of Mortgage Lenders. \nThe presentation and discussion will cover how international financial centres around the world are developing\, the impact of regulatory changes and new opportunities arising from market developments such as the internationalisation of China’s markets and the rise of Asia. The presentation will also look at how key financial centres such as Singapore and London could cooperate more and grow their relationship.\n \nMark Boleat has been Chairman of the Policy and Resources Committee of the City of London since May 2012\, leadingon strategy\, resource allocation and engagement with legislators and regulators in the UK\, Europe and across the world on policy issues affecting London as a key international financial centre. This also involves taking a lead on relations with local and regional government\, along with building links with other International Financial Centres such as New York\, Beijing\, Shanghai and Mumbai.\n \nMark Boleat holds a portfolio of public sector\, commercial and voluntary positions. He is Chairman of the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority\, the Guernsey Competition and Regulatory Authority and the States of Jersey Development Company. He has previously been Director General of the Building Societies Association\, the Council of Mortgage Lenders and the Association of British Insurers.
