Assessing the Impact for Investors of the Post-Election Political Transition \nFor the first time since Malaysia’s independence\, UMNO and its coalition Barisan Nasional (BN) have been voted out. The alliance that is taking over power\, Pakatan Harapan (PH)\, brings back together former UMNO stalwarts and then political opponents\, Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Anwar Ibrahim. \nWhile the transition to a new government is progressing smoothly\, the reshuffle of the country’s ruling elite is creating significant uncertainty. It remains unclear to what extent PH will now seek to overturn BN’s policies\, whether in relation to trade\, investment and the economy\, or to the country’s foreign policy including towards China. \nThe seminar will shed light on the political and social dynamics behind the earth-shattering election’s results. It will also provide insights on Malaysia’s new leadership. Last\, it will offer prospective views on the impact for investors of the ongoing transition. \nSpeakers: \nMohamed Nawab Osman is the Coordinator of the Malaysia Program at RSIS and a Senior Advisor at Asia Group Advisors. He is a leading expert on the politics of Malaysia and of Muslim politics in Southeast and South Asia. Governments have started to invest in improving air and water quality\, low-carbon transport\, and better use of physical resources to shift towards green growth. Efforts are also being made to cut greenhouse gas emissions and prevent the spread of fires and haze. \nThe agroforestry and resource sector in particular has witnessed a growing momentum in adopting sustainable practices and protecting ecosystems. But questions are still being asked about whether these efforts are enough to address climate change\, and how we can spur greater growth in green investments. SUMMARY:Post-budget dialogue with Second Minister of Manpower
DESCRIPTION:Picture of the event:  At the Committee of Supply Debate on 5 March 2018\, the Ministry of Manpower announced a number of new policies and programmes. These include foreign workforce policy changes\, and enhancements to the Adapt & Grow initiative (please refer to www.mom.gov.sg/about-us/cos2018 for full details). \nEuroCham will host Second Minister of Manpower Mrs. Josephine Teo in a dialogue that will focus on the recent policy announcements by MOM and any key manpower issues of interest to the business community. \nAbout \n \n  \n  \nMrs Josephine Teo \nMinister\, Prime Minister’s Office\, Second Minister for Home Affairs and Second Minister for Manpower \n  \nMrs Josephine Teo was appointed Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office on 1 May 2017 where she oversees the National Population and Talent Division. She is concurrently Second Minister in the Manpower and Home Affairs ministries. She previously served in the Finance\, Transport\, and Foreign Affairs ministries. \nA Member of Parliament since 2006\, Mrs Teo was formerly Chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Education and Assistant Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC). She represented the labour movement on the government-appointed Economic Strategies Committee and co-chaired the sub-committee on Fostering Inclusive Growth. Mrs Teo was concurrently Chief Executive Officer of the not-for-profit organisation Business China\, a platform launched by then Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and then China Premier Wen Jiabao to strengthen Singapore’s bicultural foundations\, and remains a member of its Board. \nShe is married and has three children. \n—- \nThis dialogue is open to EuroCham members only. SUMMARY:Myanmar - Energy Infrastructure Development Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Despite being plagued with difficulties in its transition to democracy\, Myanmar is a country in the region that desperately requires investment in its energy sector to underpin stable economic development. The country has one of the lowest rates of electricity access in South East Asia – only around 30% of its 53 million inhabitants have access to grid electricity – and yet it is an exporter of energy with extensive gas and hydro resources.   \nDrawing from commercial and legal backgrounds\, the panel will cover some of the current obstacles to investment in Myanmar and projects that are nonetheless being developed.
