SUMMARY:Global Water Conference 2016
DESCRIPTION:In Southeast Asia\, water resources are under strain due to rapid urbanization and industrialization. The situation is made worse by water-related disasters\, climate change and lack of governance in the region. Water resource issues include inadequate drinking-water supply and sanitation facilities\, water pollution\, floods\, the siltation of river systems\, and the management of rivers and large dams present special management challenges. Barriers to addressing these issues include poverty\, illiteracy\, rapid population growth\, and ineffective institutions and policies for developing\, distributing\, pricing\, and conserving water resources. The complex patterns of these issues are shaped by differences in wealth\, environment\, and political systems. \n  \nThe Global Water Conference 2016 on August 17 & 18\, supported by Ministry of Livestock\, Fisheries and Rural Development\, Myanmar (MLFRD) and Southeast Asian Water Utilities Network (SEAWUN) with the theme of “Sustainable Water: The Keystone for Economy\, Environment\, Health and Security” is designed to facilitate the implementation of the water management policies and encouraging collaboration between those working on water resources management and water technologies\, and those working on environmental\, public health\, economic growth and other issues. This is also an unparalleled platform to get updated on the market direction and explore. \nFor more information and to register\, please click here. \nGlobal Water Conference Brochure

SUMMARY:The Kula Ring: Aesthetic Considerations of Sharing and Exchange
DESCRIPTION:The Kula Ring: Aesthetic Considerations of Sharing and Exchange 17 August – 4 September 2016  \nAn art event initiated by the Goethe-Institut Singapore \nAs part of the Singapore International Festival of Arts 2016 \nHow is »the sharing game« played in other parts of the world? Are there cultures of commerce that do not rely on the principle of profit? Is it possible to trace back the nowadays propagated ideas of commons and sharing economy to much older practices? \nThe Kula Ring art exhibition is based on a ritual exchange of gifts among inhabitants of the Trobriand Islands in Papua New Guinea. Today\, necklaces made of little red shells still circulate clockwise from island to island. The meaning of these artistic objects is unknown. They are highly valuable but not sellable. \nThis ancient cultural practice called »kula« is being taken up by artists from around the world and given a visual and tactile dimension through aesthetic means of expression. Their works question conventional ideas of trade\, value\, exchange and profit and put the meaning of creative production and the sale of art up for discussion. They have produced art works of many forms: found items\, swapped objects\, photographs\, exotic spices and ancient Asian dishes. \nHow is the sharing game played out today by individual artists from diverse parts of the world?  What are the potentialities embedded in the gifts/objects and the actions/exchanges of the Kula Ring?  Can we rethink circulation and currency without the commerce and profit propagated by our supposedly rational economic system? \nThis art event was initiated by the Goethe-Institut Singapore\, curated by Alfons Hug\, for the Kultursymposium Weimar 2016.  It premieres in Asia at the Singapore International Festival of Arts\, with an added performative component in collaboration with Festival Director Ong Keng Sen. \nWith works by \nRenata de Bonis | Brasilia\nNewell Harry | Australia\nSamuel Herzog | Switzerland\nRoslisham Ismail | Malaysia\nReynier Leyva Novo | Cuba\nDonna Ong | Singapore\nPost-Museum | Singapore\nThomas Rentmeister | Germany\nAlfons Hug I Curator I Germany \nThe exhibition website is accesible HERE. Entry to the exhibition is free. \nYou are cordially invited to join the Opening Night of the Exhibition on 17 August\, Wednesday from 7pm to 10pm. No RSVP required. \nFor further enquiries\, please contact Goethe Institut at arts@singapur.goethe.org \nFor more information about the Singapore International Festival of Arts 2016 please refer to: www.sifa.sg

SUMMARY:BREXIT: The EU and Asia Beyond the Referendum
DESCRIPTION:BREXIT: The EU and Asia Beyond the Referendum \nMuch buzz about how British voters are now regretting their vote to leave the European Union (EU) has gained traction in the local media. Nevertheless\, newly elected British Prime Minister Theresa May has made it clear that the “Brexit” decision is final. Having recently started her first of many international trips to France and Germany\, Prime Minister May now treads on a delicate web of political and economic issues in hope of cementing this watershed decision made on 23rd June 2016. \nIn Singapore\, Britain’s exit from the EU has afflicted apprehension in many businesses. The UK offers a convenient gateway for Singaporean and regional businesses to enter the EU consumer market. Has the Brexit prompted many companies to rethink their business operations and strategy in light of new economic and political risks that emerge from this development? \nOn the 26th of August\, EuroCham organised an event on the impacts of “Brexit” in Singapore and for other ASEAN markets. This event not only addressed the issues arising from “Brexit” from a policy-making angle but also commercial angle and one of assessment with some medium mitigation factors. \nWe were pleased to have H.E. Dr. Michael Pulch\, EU Ambassador and Head of the EU Delegation to Singapore\, who shared his thoughts in an opening speech.  This was followed by a discussion with Ms. Marie Diron\, Senior Vice President Sovereign Risk Group at Moody’s Investors Services and Mr. Chris Humphrey\, Executive Director of EU-ASEAN Business Council who shared their expertise and thoughts during a panel discussion. In addition\, Mr. Andrew Naylor\,  Executive Director at Cicero Group will also took part in the panel discussion and gave us an overview of the political drivers and the impact that Brexit has had. \nThis event is exclusively for EuroCham members only. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAbout the speakers: \nH.E. Dr. Michael Pulch: Ambassador of the European Union \n  \n  \n  \nMs. Marie Diron: Senior VP – Sovereign Risk Group Singapore\, Moody’s Investor Service \nMr. Chris Humphrey: Executive Director\, EU-ASEAN Business Council \nMr Andrew Naylor: Executive Director\, Cicero Group \nSession moderated by: \nMs. Lina Baechtiger: Executive Director of EuroCham
