The EuroCham Wine & Spirits Committee is proposing for the enactment of legislation in Singapore that makes illegal any removal or tampering with the batch codes after extensive consultations with industry stakeholders.
The importance of batch codes as a risk management tool cannot be underestimated; they are the only means for the manufacturers to trace their products through the supply chain network and is vital for any product recalls that should be carried out efficiently with minimal disruption to business operations.
The batch codes help to protect consumers’ confidence in trusted brands as companies ensure their products are safe and only genuine products are sold in the market. Although Singapore laws currently mandate for all product labels to contain basic information about the product, there are no specific laws that makes removal or tampering with batch codes illegal. EuroCham Singapore proposes for a legislation to include such a clause to safeguard brand owners and consumers from counterfeit alcohol.
